The Tension of Expectation

By
Nathanael Sommers

There are ways of knowing something without ever really experiencing it. A favorite story can stir emotion, pull at something deep, even feel personal in moments, yet still remain at a distance. It can feel close, but never quite real.

For many, a relationship with God can feel similar. There’s understanding, belief, even gratitude at times. The words are familiar, the rhythms are practiced, yet the connection feels thin, like something meant to be alive has settled into routine.

Over time, it becomes easier to adjust expectations than to wrestle with the tension. To accept a version of faith that fits within what feels manageable. But every once in a while, something shifts just enough to make you realize this isn’t how it’s supposed to feel.
